Coming to Netflix December 20, 2019
Remember that time there was a pope of the Catholic Church that looked like Emperor Palpatine from the original Star Wars trilogy and he stepped down as pope due to mounting pressure from the building church global sex scandal and his mishandling of it and then another more liberal guy from Argentina became pope instead and was like “hey everyone, maybe don’t be so crazy?” and the masses were like “okay this guy is alright.”
Remember that?
Cause here’s a movie about those two dudes, with Anthony Hopkins as former Hitler Youth turned sex scandal cover up-er turned pope Joseph Ratzinger and Jonathan Pryce as pope to be Jorge Mario Bergoglio (dba Pope Francis).
Debuting at the Telluride Film Festival this year, “The Two Popes” was apparently a surprise hit from the director of “City of God” and “Constant Gardener” and it will be hitting Netflix on December 20 for everyone to see why this was so well liked among all the other more well known and flashier TFF entries. Pope vs Pope! Two men enter, one man leaves…as pope!
John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch
Coming to Netflix December 24, 2019
Netflix figured out recently that they don’t have to be just one thing.
They do not need to limit their output to movies and television-style series of certain lengths. They realized they could spend a lot of money to snag a lot of stand up comedy specials that would have otherwise gone to HBO or Comedy Central, and then they figured out they could produce more short form content with limited scope, like that Bill Murray Christmas special that was as boozy and lackadaisical as its host, and that time the Lonely Island fellas did a musical about those baseball meatheads from the 80’s.
Maybe that’s their strength, stuff like this upcoming John Mulaney special, “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch,” a throwback to children-centric television specials of yore, featuring lots of folksy sets, sing-alongs, jokes, and whatever random celebrities drop by. Coming out on Christmas Eve makes this a heckuva present to enjoy with the family, or with your legally purchased, state-sanctioned marijuana.
