The Woman in the Window

Coming to Netflix May 14, 2021

Every now and then a movie is made by a group of people that, from the outside, would seem like a slam dunk of a production. Take a popular book, a successful director, a respected writer, a slew of loved actors, throw them together, and chances are that the resulting film should be something worthwhile.

But when “The Woman in the Window” was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in 2019, it was delayed because test screenings were so disastrous that rewrites and re-shoots were ordered. So even if you take the director of “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement” Joe Wright, give the screenplay duties to acclaimed writer Tracy Letts, and cast Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell and Brian Tyree Henry, you still might come up with a complete turd of a movie.

And word on the streets is that those re-shoots did nothing to fix any problems this movie may have had, so now I’m just looking forward to the trainwreck that will be this particular “Netflix Original” and you should, as well.

Army of the Dead

Coming to Netflix May 21, 2021

After a several years’ long pause from making movies, Zack Snyder is back with a Las Vegas heist movie set during a zombie outbreak, an Ocean’s 11 Of The Dead, if you will. Or maybe 28 Dog Day Afternoons Later. Or how about Money Train to Busan? The Inside Omega Man? Are any of these working for you?

Army of the Dead is here, and I can’t decide which of these two things is crazier: first off, Dave Bautista has shown an incredible amount of good taste in selecting movies to appear in (Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049, Dune) and he said the reason he signed on to lead this ensemble is because the script was amazing and had something in it he found compelling outside of just being a fun action movie, and that’s crazy.

But what may be crazier is how this got made in the first place: Zack Snyder had a general pitch meeting with some Netflix executive, and when he simply said “Las Vegas heist movie during a zombie outbreak,” apparently the Netflix exec immediately pulled a rope hanging from the ceiling and millions of dollars floated down on top of Snyder for him to make the movie. Amazing. Someone get me a meeting with this person.
