Worth

Coming to Netflix September 3, 2021

From the writer of the current MonsterVerse (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, etc.), and featuring now legendary comedian and actor Michael Keaton (Batman, Birdman, Spider-Man: Homecoming) comes the new Netflix movie “Worth,” which has been described as a moral thriller about the September 11th victims’ fund.

Sound like a highly entertaining topic? Of course it doesn’t. But neither does the Catholic Church’s cover up of sex crimes within their communities, and yet another Michael Keaton movie, “Spotlight,” proved that tough topics can still be the basis for compelling narratives. Twenty years after the events of that day, we now have a movie about Kenneth Feinberg, the attorney tasked with being the special master of the official September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, which meant he had to take part in determining the monetary value of human life.

A strange and weird concept that only makes sense in our capitalist view of society, as if any amount of money can make people whole again, this quandary is at the center of this fairly well reviewed 2008 Black List screenplay turned 2020 Sundance Film Festival debut and eventual Netflix release.

Kate

Coming to Netflix September 10, 2021

Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the action movie bona fides of one Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

After appearing in a number of action-related genre films, she got to step up and do some ass kicking of her own in “Scott Pilgrim vs The World,” followed shortly thereafter by the prequel to “The Thing” the next year.

A little while later she does “10 Cloverfield Lane,” and recently was featured in both “Gemini Man” and “Birds of Prey.,” and despite what you may think of the quality of the individual movies, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is always great in them.

And now here she gets to be the lead in her own action movie, “Kate,” in which she plays a dying assassin tearing up Tokyo on a mission to fix a past mistake while also taking out the bad, well, badder guys. Woody Harrelson co-stars, and being produced by 87North Productions (John Wick, Atomic Blonde) means the bar is set pretty high for entertaining onscreen action sequences.
