Murder Mystery

Coming to Netflix June 12, 2019

When Adam Sandler signed an exclusive four-movie deal with Netflix and provided them with the absurdist Western “comedy” The Ridiculous Six, it seemed like a curious move for all involved. Netflix, just starting to get earnest about creating original content, seemed to be entrusting a lot to a comedic actor whose most successful days appeared to be behind him, and Sandler almost seemed to be throwing in the towel with this modern day “direct to video” style distribution plan.

But it has worked out for everyone in the end, as Sandler’s movies have been watched so often that Netflix went ahead and ordered four more movies from him, and now here he is with a murder mystery comedy called Murder Mystery, starring himself as an NYPD officer on vacation with his murder mystery novel loving wife (played by Jennifer Aniston) and they get wrapped up in a wait for it MURDER MYSTERY holy cow who saw that one coming? And if you are the type of person who does not generally like Adam Sandler comedies, you MAY like this one because it was directed by Kyle Newacheck, who has comedy chops thanks to Community and Workaholics, and who already has a Netflix movie under his belt in the form of Game Over, Man!, so there is a chance this could be more than the typical Sandler comedy hackery.

While he has made garbage, he also appeared in movies ranging from good to great when he worked with interesting people like Paul Thomas Anderson and Judd Apatow, so there is a precedent for this kind of thing.

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story By Martin Scorsese

Coming to Netflix June 12, 2019

Martin Scorsese is known for dramas and mob movies and wild pictures starring Leonardo Di Caprio but he has also spent a lot of time making music documentaries. He has movies about The Band, The Rolling Stones, and George Harrison, and he’s already done one Bob Dylan documentary called No Direction Home so why not come up with another?

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story By Martin Scorsese will hit Netflix on June 12, but will also come out in a few theaters across the country and internationally ahead of the digital release so it can qualify for some Oscar type award stuff. Unlike No Direction Home, which took a look at Bob Dylan’s whole career and trajectory from folk singer to rock star, this Rolling Thunder Revue is specifically about the fall season of 1975, how America (and the world) seemed to be going crazy all over, and it shows a single concert Dylan performed during that time period.

All combined it makes for a collage of a time period, an impression of an era, a hint of the madness of the mid 70’s and how it all seemed to be coming down on top of us, at least if it wasn’t all being held up by the amazing artists of the day. Like, oh I dunno, Bob Dylan. Also this will be Scrosese’s 1st of 2 Netflix movies this year so count your blessings!
